The Australian Government’s Cheaper Home Batteries Program provides support for eligible battery installations through the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES). For 2026, eligible batteries can receive Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) based on usable battery capacity. The STC factor and applicable capacity rules determine the level of support available, so the actual discount can vary depending on the battery system and installation.
NSW households may also be eligible for a Virtual Power Plant (VPP) incentive when they connect an eligible battery to a participating VPP provider. From 1 July 2026, batteries with capacity up to 50 kWh can be eligible for the NSW VPP incentive, with the incentive calculated according to the usable battery capacity made available to the grid, up to 28 kWh.
The amount available through the VPP incentive varies depending on the provider, battery capacity, contract terms and other eligibility requirements. The federal battery support and NSW VPP incentive may be available together where all relevant eligibility requirements are met.
